It has occurred to me that I was at a bit of a fault in terms of my political leanings with regards to the Cyprus Problem. As I was a Cypriot Nationalist, I felt like my own community were under threat of a bloodless genocide from Turkey and that in 10 years time there would be no more Turkish speaking Cypriots left in the world, this is because it was announced by Serdar Denktas that Anatolian settlers made up 80% of North Cyprus's population, In North Cyprus, the high tide of immigrants from Turkey has introduced a lot of crime to an area of the world where this type of thing was unheard of. The main reason why I was against this immigration was partly to do with the crime but it was also because I saw that in the future there would be no more pure Cypriot people left (whatever that means).I have spoken to many different people who were also Turkish Cypriot but they disagreed with my sentiments. I believe that this reason we saw the issue differently was because this was more a question of identity than anything else. Because I had an overall Cypriot identity which made me see a differnet view but because they had a Turkish identity they didn't see a threat because they viewed it as topping up the TC population. In he end, I have realised that this was only something which existed in my own head only. From my own personal experience, this pan-Cypriot identity had only manifested itself in Turkish Cypriot people. Greek Cypriots on the other hand do not have this Pan-Cypriot identity. From my experience, they kind of live their lives without thinking about TCs and only care about their own community. This is when I started to realise a pattern. Another thing that Religion and Culture are more important than genetics. Genetic tests have came about quite recently, so before that we never knew much about it. For instance, two people from the same religion/culture are more likely to marry than people from two different religions and cultures. That is why marriages between TCs and Turks are 100x more common than between TCs and GCs. Despite them being from the same stock.
Instead of resisting the change that is happening, I chose to embrace it. This world is full of too much hatred already and doesn't need any more of it. What was ironic was that I have family members who are married to people who are from Turkey so it was very hypocritical of me to think like this. And who knows, I ma fall in love with a girl from Turkey.
